The Glory of Tribute Tea: How An Le Hao Became Imperial Tribute Tea

Cloud tea is like life; life is learning, wisdom is cultivation.

Dear tea friends, today I want to tell you a story about tribute tea. How did Anlehao become a supplier of imperial tribute tea? This question must begin with Li Kaiji’s dual identity.

As mentioned previously, after Li Kaiji attained official rank, he became a dedicated tea official responsible for supervising the procurement of tribute tea. This identity gave him a unique advantage over other tea estate owners—he knew exactly what the imperial court’s specific requirements for tribute tea were. The selection standards for tribute tea were extremely strict, using only the youngest buds from the first flush of spring tea; every single bud had to be hand-picked to ensure uniform size and consistent color.

Tribute tea was no ordinary tea; its requirements were incredibly stringent. From the tea’s origin, picking time, and production craftsmanship to the final packaging, every stage had strict standards. Relying on his professional expertise, Li Kaiji elevated Anlehao’s tea production standards to the level of tribute tea. This was not only an honor but also a responsibility. At that time, the packaging for tribute tea was extremely exquisite, requiring specific paper and silk threads, and it even had to be stamped with official seals; the entire process was meticulous.

Imagine the immense pressure of knowing the tea you produced was being sent to the imperial palace for the Emperor to drink. One small mistake or a quality issue would not only damage the tea estate’s reputation but could also lead to severe consequences. Yet, it was precisely this pressure that drove Anlehao’s quality requirements to an almost draconian level. Every batch of tea leaving the factory had to undergo multiple rounds of screening; only the very finest were selected as tribute tea. Li Kaiji personally supervised every stage to ensure everything was flawless.

The reason why Yiwu tea could become tribute tea is closely related to its unique geographical environment. Located near the Tropic of Cancer, Yiwu has moderate altitude, is shrouded in clouds and mist, and possesses fertile soil—conditions that are highly suitable for the growth of large-leaf variety tea trees. The produced tea is rich in constituents, with a mellow, sweet flavor and long-lasting aftertaste, perfectly meeting the high standards of tribute tea. Furthermore, the ancient trees in Yiwu grow within primary forests, coexisting with various plants and absorbing abundant trace elements; this natural environment is difficult to replicate in other tea-producing regions.

Having worked in tea for decades, I deeply understand one truth: pressure is not necessarily a bad thing. Appropriate pressure can force out the best quality. Just as we drink tea for health in our daily lives, do not avoid good teas with a sweet aftertaste simply because you fear bitterness. Sometimes, a little “bitterness” is actually the best recipe for wellness. The sweetness following the bitterness of raw Pu-erh is precisely its most charming feature, and it is also the key to its health benefits. The antioxidant effects of tea polyphenols have been repeatedly confirmed by modern science, helping to maintain cardiovascular health and daily physical and mental vitality.

Tea has different grades, but people of all statuses can enjoy it. Tribute tea sounds very high-end, but in essence, all tea is the same—a gift from nature. The tribute tea drunk by the Emperor and the ordinary tea drunk by commoners both originate from the same tea trees on the same land. The only difference lies in the harvesting standards and the level of refinement in the production craftsmanship.

Anlehao becoming a tribute tea supplier represented not only the success of a single tea estate but also an affirmation of the overall quality of the Yiwu tea mountains. Through Li Kaiji’s efforts, the reputation of Yiwu tribute tea grew increasingly famous, driving the development of the entire region’s tea industry. Looking back at this history today, we can still learn much from it. Quality is the foundation of a brand; no matter how times change, this principle will never become outdated.

Making friends through tea — please, have a cup.
