Cold-Brewed Tea
Under yet another round of extreme heat warnings, we are drenched in sweat through this hot, hot, hot summer. At times like these, tea can shed its warmth and come to you with a cool refreshment. Why not temporarily set aside the iced americano and try a glass of cool, sweet tea liquor, perhaps with some fresh, sweet fruit? Cold-brewed tea lets you quietly “come out on top” even in the sweltering heat.
The process of making cold-brewed tea can be done in several ways, depending on your equipment:
Method 1: First, rinse the tea once with hot water. Then take a large glass container or a cold-brew pot with a built-in strainer, place the rinsed tea leaves in the vessel, add an appropriate amount of water, and refrigerate for 3 to 4 hours. Remove, and a delicious cold-brewed Pu-erh is ready.
Method 2: If you have an ice-drip coffee maker at home, you can use it to make ice-drip Pu-erh. Place the rinsed tea leaves at the bottom of the ice-drip pot, then put an appropriate amount of ice cubes in the upper chamber. At room temperature, let the ice slowly melt and drip onto the tea leaves. After 3 to 4 hours, you will have ice-drip Pu-erh tea.
Method 3: If you do not have a large glass vessel or ice-drip equipment, you can use the most common fairness pitcher for cold brewing. Place the rinsed tea leaves and an appropriate ratio of ice cubes directly into the fairness pitcher, let it sit at room temperature for one hour, and you will have a cup of delicious cold-brewed tea. Because the fairness pitcher is smaller, the ice melts faster, and the tea liquor can be even more concentrated.
Cold-brewed Pu-erh is very convenient and does not require much skill. For tea lovers who enjoy drinking tea but want something cold during the peak summer heat, cold-brewed Pu-erh is an excellent choice. The sugars in tea dissolve first in cold water, while at low temperatures, the bitter compounds do not fully release, so cold-brewed tea tastes sweeter with little to no bitterness. Compared with hot tea, cold-brewed tea has a fresher, lighter color, a unique and refreshing mouthfeel, water-infused aroma, and a lingering aftertaste that invites you back for more.
Creative ways to enjoy cold-brewed Pu-erh
Honey Peach Pu-erh: Take one honey peach, cut in half. Juice one half and set aside; slice the other half into attractive pieces. Take your pre-brewed cold Pu-erh raw tea, add the peach juice to a glass first, then pour in an appropriate amount of cold-brewed tea liquor, add the fresh peach slices, and finally garnish with a sprig of fresh herbs inserted into the glass.
Ice-Drip Citrus Pu-erh: Using the second cold-brewing method described above, replace the tea leaves with a whole tangerine Pu-erh, add a few extra ice cubes, wait patiently, and you can enjoy a refreshing, healthy cup of ice-drip citrus Pu-erh tea.
