On June 8, celebrated performing artist, stage director of Beijing People’s Art Theatre, and July 1 Medal recipient Lan Tianye passed away in Beijing at the age of 95. Beyond his towering theatrical achievements, Lan Tianye was widely known for his deep, lifelong affection for Chinese tea and scholarly connoisseurship.
In artistic interviews spanning decades, Lan Tianye frequently reflected on the essential affinity between performing arts and tea appreciation. He maintained that both disciplines require unhurried patience, absolute authenticity, and the cultivation of an undisturbed internal stillness. He approached every bowl of tea not with theatrical ostentation, but with quiet humility, appreciating the natural evolution of leaves under boiling water.
