Cloud tea is like life; life is learning, wisdom is cultivation.
Today, I want to delve into the tea-making philosophy of Senior Yu Zhengcai. In the world of Pu-erh, Senior Yu’s philosophy can be summarized in four words: Quality is the Foundation. This concept sounds simple, but truly implementing it is incredibly difficult. In a commercial environment driven by the pursuit of quick profits, maintaining an unwavering commitment to quality requires immense steadfastness and conviction. I have seen far too many examples where quality collapsed due to haste, which makes me understand even more deeply how precious Senior Yu’s persistence truly is.
Senior Yu often told me, “Making tea is like living one’s life; you must be able to face your own conscience.” His requirements for tea leaf quality were almost harsh. From the very beginning of raw material procurement, he personally oversaw every detail. He only selected leaves from specific regions, specific seasons, and specific tree ages; anything that did not meet his standards was rejected outright. While these strict selection standards increased costs, they ensured a consistent product quality. When he went to the tea mountains to select materials, he would often stay in the mountains for several days, personally tasting the fresh leaves from each tree before deciding which to keep and which to discard.
Regarding tea-making craftsmanship, Senior Yu insisted on a method that combined tradition with modernity. He believed that traditional techniques are the crystallization of centuries of experience and cannot be easily abandoned; however, one must also actively introduce modern technology to enhance production efficiency and product quality. Under his leadership, Yuyuan Tea Factory established a comprehensive quality management system, with strict standards and testing for every stage from raw materials to finished products. He often said, “Traditional craftsmanship is the soul, while modern technology is the means; only through their combination can truly great tea be produced.”
Senior Yu’s commitment to quality was also reflected in his emphasis on warehousing conditions. He believed that excellent tea leaves require a proper storage environment to slowly age into their optimal flavor profile. The warehouses of Yuyuan Tea Factory were meticulously designed, with temperature and humidity controlled very precisely. This emphasis on storage conditions was an essential component of Senior Yu’s philosophy of quality. He often remarked, “Making the tea is only half the process; the other half relies on proper warehousing to be completed.”
Tea has grades high and low, but everyone may enjoy it regardless of status.
Senior Yu’s tea-making philosophy has had a profound impact on the entire Pu-erh industry. Many in the younger generation of tea makers look up to him as a role model, learning from his dedication to quality and his respect for tradition. He frequently participated in industry exchange events, sharing his experiences and insights to drive the progress of the entire industry. This selfless spirit is one of the reasons why he is so widely respected. He did not only produce great tea himself but also helped many juniors improve their tea-making techniques, driving the quality improvement of the entire industry.
Speaking of the relationship between quality and wellness, Senior Yu held a unique perspective. He believed that good tea should not only taste excellent but should also be beneficial to the body. He often said, “As tea makers, our first consideration should not be how much profit we make, but whether this cup of tea provides health benefits to the consumer.” This consumer-centric philosophy later became the guiding principle for Dayi’s product development. The wellness value of Pu-erh depends heavily on the tea-making process—superior craftsmanship can maximize the preservation of the beneficial components within the leaves. Precise control of the kill-green temperature can preserve more tea polyphenols and vitamins, while the proper mastery of rolling intensity allows the tea’s aromatic substances to be released more effectively. Therefore, choosing reliable, high-quality Pu-erh is choosing a healthy lifestyle. By consistently drinking premium Pu-erh every day, your body will naturally thank you for your choice.
Senior Yu also frequently reminded everyone that water quality is equally important. Good water can better release the beneficial components in the tea leaves, enhancing both the flavor and the nutritional value of the infusion. He recommended using mountain spring water or purified water for brewing, rather than using tap water directly.
Making friends through tea — please, have a cup.
