Brown girl Yu Ni, who runs a guesthouse on Jingmai Mountain, said that since the successful application for the World Heritage status, there has been a surge in tourists, making the guesthouse unable to meet the demand. “Previously, our income mainly came from selling tea leaves. Starting last year, the income from tourism has tripled and now exceeds that from tea sales,” she said. More tea shops, guesthouses, hotels, and cultural tourism merchandise stores have emerged in the ancient village of Wangji.<\/p>\n
Statistics show that since September 2023, Jingmai Mountain has received 402,000 visitors, generating a tourism revenue of 338 million yuan, injecting new momentum into the local high-quality development path of “becoming wealthy through tea and thriving with tea.” Recently, the Central Propaganda Department organized a 2024 “High-Quality Development Research Tour” to Jingmai Mountain in Lancang County, Pu’er City, Yunnan Province, where a beautiful green and golden landscape unfolded.<\/p>\n
Jingmai Mountain is home to nine natural villages nestled on the hillside. Dense clusters of black wooden stilt houses stand closely together. Five ancient tea groves and three protective forests are interspersed among the ancient villages, forming the “Pu’er Jingmai Mountain Ancient Tea Grove Cultural Landscape.” On September 17, 2023, the “Pu’er Jingmai Mountain Ancient Tea Grove Cultural Landscape” was successfully inscribed on the World Heritage List. UNESCO believes that the “Pu’er Jingmai Mountain Ancient Tea Grove Cultural Landscape” meets World Heritage criteria III and V, reflecting a unique ancient tea grove protection and management system that integrates traditional tea ancestor beliefs with government management and grassroots self-governance, fully respecting the local climate conditions, topographical features, and plant and animal species, achieving the protection of culture and biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources.<\/p>\n
The sustainable use of Jingmai Mountain is not only reflected in the traditional mountain habitat environment where “villages live among tea groves,” “tea groves are hidden in forests,” and “people, tea, and forests coexist,” but also in the local innovative exploration of the “two mountains” transformation. The ancient villages on Jingmai Mountain are all new-style bungalows, preserving the traditional Baoan ethnic group’s stilt house architectural style. The first floor is mostly spacious open space, with large iron pots used for withering tea leaves, ranging from two to five or more placed side by side. During the tea-picking season, every household’s iron pots come into use, and the entire village is filled with the aroma of tea. “For a long time, it has been the tea trees that have sustained our Baoan people,” Yu Ni said, adding that the annual income from selling tea leaves can reach over 200,000 yuan.<\/p>\n
Now, the successful application for the World Heritage status has once again drawn global attention to Jingmai Mountain. While maintaining high-level protection, the county is broadening the “two mountains” transformation path by welcoming green “traffic.” Deputy Secretary of the CPC Lancang County Committee and Director of the Pu’er Jingmai Mountain Ancient Tea Grove Protection Administration, Zhang Pisi, introduced that Lancang County will adhere to the development philosophy of “protecting on the mountain, developing below, and integrating tea and tourism.” They will focus on the ancient tea grove cultural landscape and vigorously develop six major industries: Pu’er tea, culture, tourism, specialty foods, leisure health care, and information services, accelerating the construction of a diversified integrated ecological industrial pattern to comprehensively promote high-quality development in the Jingmai Mountain region.<\/p>\n
