When mentioning the time-honored brands of the Yiwu tea region, Song Pin is undoubtedly one of the most renowned names, hailed as the “Tea King.” Its story deserves our close attention.

Song Pin was established during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican era, located in the holy land of Yunnan Pu-erh tea—Yiwu. Since ancient times, Yiwu has been the head of the six great tea mountains, producing tea of exceptional quality; during the Qing Dynasty, it was even a primary source for tribute tea. In such a flourishing tea industry region, Song Pin’s ability to stand out and become one of the most esteemed tea brands demonstrates its extraordinary strength and quality. The founders of Song Pin were the Yuan Qian Li Zhen family, who engaged in the tea business for generations and possessed an intimate knowledge of every tea garden and ancient tree in the Yiwu tea region. This regional experience, accumulated over generations, is Song Pin’s most precious wealth.

In Yiwu during that era, tea brands were numerous and competition was fierce. Each brand had its own specialty: some excelled in producing round tea, some in brick tea, and others focused on raw materials from specific mountain peaks. The uniqueness of Song Pin lay in its extreme pursuit of raw materials and its commitment to perfection in craftsmanship. It is said that when Song Pin purchased tea back then, they did not accept just any tea; instead, it underwent rigorous selection, using only the highest quality spring tea raw materials. This persistence in quality meant that the tea produced by Song Pin was already highly sought after by tea enthusiasts at that time. Local tea farmers in Yiwu took pride in being able to sell their tea to Song Pin, as this was, in itself, a recognition of the tea’s quality.

My knowledge of Song Pin initially came from an old tea book. The book recorded the tea trade situation of Song Pin during the Republican era, mentioning that their tea was exported far to Tibet, Sichuan, Southeast Asia, and other regions. Transportation conditions in those days were very backward; for tea to be transported out of Yiwu, it relied entirely on the Ma Bang caravans, crossing mountains and ridges over journeys lasting dozens of days before reaching its destination. Under such arduous transportation conditions, Song Pin’s tea was still able to maintain its quality, which shows that they put a great deal of effort into the pressing and packaging of the tea. The caravan drivers of the Ma Bang were also important messengers in spreading Song Pin’s tea products.

From a health perspective, the tea from the era of Song Pin had raw materials entirely sourced from the pristine tea gardens of the Yiwu ancient tea mountains, with no residue of any pesticides or chemical fertilizers. This purely natural tea is rich in polyphenols, catechins, vitamins, and minerals. Long-term consumption offers various benefits to the human body, such as antioxidant properties, aiding vascular health, and promoting metabolism. Ancient people might not have known so many scientific principles, but based on hundreds of years of experience, they knew that drinking tea could aid digestion, relieve greasiness, refresh the mind, and assist in daily health maintenance. These simple understandings are consistent with modern scientific research results. Today we know that the types of polyphenols contained in Yiwu ancient tree tea are particularly abundant, and these substances have a very significant antioxidant effect on the human body.

Tea has its levels of quality, and it can be enjoyed by all, regardless of status. The legendary beginning of Song Pin teaches us a lesson: truly great things can withstand the test of time. In an era without brand advertising or internet promotion, Song Pin won the title of “Tea King” purely through word-of-mouth and quality. This philosophy of winning through quality is a truth in any era. Drinking tea is the same; there is no need to pursue fancy packaging or gimmicks; a cup of pure, good tea will naturally leave one with an endless aftertaste. Making friends through tea — please, have a cup.

—

Author: Lam Sam (LamSam), the Old Tea Head
ZENTEA MANOR
Alliance Supply Chain Services Limited
www.zentea-shop.com

Cloud tea is like life; life is learning, wisdom is cultivation.
