This story begins in 1938.

The predecessor of China Tea Corporation was the “China Yunnan Tea Trade Co., Ltd.,” established in 1938. At that time, during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, the state founded this company specifically to ensure the supply and export of tea, a vital commodity. It can be said that from its very inception, China Tea bore a national mission, fundamentally distinguishing it from ordinary commercial tea estates. During the war years, tea exports were a crucial means of earning foreign exchange, which was essential to the nation’s economic lifeline.

After the founding of New China in 1949, China Tea Corporation was formally established. However, there was one problem—New China needed a tea trademark that represented the national image. In March 1951, a special advertisement was published on the front page of the People’s Daily, calling for public submissions for a tea trademark design. You heard that correctly: a tea trademark design actually appeared on the front page of the People’s Daily! This demonstrates how much importance the state placed on this matter. At that time, New China had just been established and there was much work to be done, yet the nation already recognized the importance of brand building.

Designers from across society participated enthusiastically, with so many submitted proposals that several rooms were needed to store them. Ultimately, the design by Mr. Cao Chengxi from Shanghai stood out. His design was simple and elegant, featuring the character “Tea” in the center, surrounded by eight red petals, symbolizing the flourishing development of the tea industry. On December 15, 1951, with the approval of the Central Bureau of Private Enterprises, the “China Tea” brand was officially born. This trademark became the first tea trademark after the founding of New China, and its significance was profound.

Every time I hear this story, I find it deeply inspiring. The first tea trademark of a nation represents the state’s respect for tea culture and its expectations for the tea industry. Tea is not just a beverage; it is also an important component of Chinese culture. China is the homeland of tea, and for thousands of years, tea has served as an important calling card for China’s international exchanges. China Tea Corporation later developed series such as Red Seal, Green Seal, and Blue Seal, each of which became a classic.

Speaking of wellness, I often feel that the process of making tea itself is one of the best forms of wellness. When you quiet your mind to brew a pot of tea, watching the leaves slowly unfurl in hot water and breathing in the waves of tea fragrance, that sense of tranquility and relaxation is truly precious for modern people. Scientific research shows that drinking three to five cups of tea daily can promote daily metabolism. This is not something I am saying randomly; it is a conclusion supported by extensive scientific research. The polyphenols, catechins, and L-theanine in tea provide various benefits to the human body, ranging from antioxidant properties to helping improve memory.

Tea has different grades, but people of all statuses can enjoy it. The design philosophy of the China Tea trademark was to ensure that people across the entire nation could drink good tea. This spirit of universal benefit is precisely the core value of tea culture.

The birth of New China’s first tea brand marked the beginning of a new era for the Chinese tea industry. And from that time onward, the China Tea brand has accompanied generations of Chinese people through decades of history. Whether in times of material scarcity or periods of economic takeoff, China Tea has always been an indispensable part of Chinese life. A cup of China Tea carries the collective memory of generations of Chinese people.

Making friends through tea — please, have a cup.

—

Author: Lam Sam (LamSam), the Old Tea Head
ZENTEA MANOR
Alliance Supply Chain Services Limited
www.zentea-shop.com

Cloud tea is like life; life is learning, wisdom is cultivation.
