On December 1, the 2022 International White Tea Forum, themed “Green Development, White Tea’s Blessing, Shared by the World,” grandly opened at the Grand Theatre of the Culture and Arts Center in Fuding City, Fujian Province\u2014the birthplace of world white tea. Experts, scholars and industry elites from Chinese and foreign tea circles joined the event online and offline. Under the theme, they reached consensus on paths to strengthen international connectivity and cooperation and promote the internationalized, high-quality development of the white tea industry.
The event featured an opening ceremony, the International White Tea Forum, a “Three Teas” coordination entrepreneurs’ salon, a Fuding white tea premium tea exhibition, and a tea-country tour. It was hosted by the China Chamber of Commerce of Foodstuffs and Native Produce and the International Tea Committee, and organized by the Chamber’s Tea Professional Committee and the Fuding Tea Industry Development Leading Group.

Qi Xuchun, former vice chairman of the 12th CPPCC National Committee; Zhuang Xian, former deputy director of the Standing Committee of the Fujian Provincial People’s Congress and advisor to the Cross-Strait Tea Exchange Association; Chen Shaojun, former vice chairman of the Fujian Provincial CPPCC and president of the Cross-Strait Tea Exchange Association; Cao Derong, president of the China Chamber of Commerce of Foodstuffs and Native Produce; Dong Lianghan, deputy secretary-general of the Fujian Provincial CPPCC; Yang Jiangfan, former director of the Ethnic and Religious Affairs Committee of the Fujian Provincial CPPCC and national leader of the specialty tea science program; along with leaders of the Ningde Municipal and Fuding Municipal governments, leaders of the Shanghai Tea Association, and experts and scholars from the Tea Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences’ Tea Research Institute, and Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, attended the opening ceremony.<\/p>\n

He expressed the hope that the forum would show the world the upbeat, surging vitality of the white tea industry, help the global tea community better understand and fall in love with Chinese white tea, help Fuding white tea go global and spread Chinese tea culture, and truly make Fuding white tea an ecological, healthy, quality and cultural tea renowned around the world. He welcomed guests to visit Fuding often, offer valuable suggestions for its tea industry, and jointly help Fuding white tea reach the world.<\/p>\n

Ye Qifa, deputy mayor of Ningde City, congratulated the organizers on the event’s success on behalf of the Ningde municipal Party committee and government. He introduced that Ningde has a long tea history and is a nationally famous tea homeland. Through years of development, Ningde has blazed a path of tea industry development with eastern Fujian characteristics. In 2021, Ningde’s tea gardens covered 1.0184 million mu with raw tea output of 118,300 tonnes and whole-industry-chain output value exceeding 20 billion yuan, engaging one third of the local population and 70% of farm households in tea production and related industries\u2014truly realizing “one leaf enriching a whole region.”<\/p>\n

Cao Derong noted in his address that white tea is one of China’s six great traditional tea categories and a Fujian specialty export tea. For Chinese tea exports to shift from quantitative growth to qualitative improvement and achieve high-quality development, an important measure is to strengthen the international promotion of white tea, deepen foreign consumers’ understanding of it, and raise Chinese white tea’s international fame and reputation. As the largest industry organization in China’s food and agricultural import-export sector, the Chamber stands ready to work with tea people at home and abroad, guided by the “three teas coordination” philosophy, in sincere cooperation to promote the sustained, healthy development of the Chinese and world tea industries.<\/p>\n

Chen Shaojun said in his address that the pandemic had depressed the national tea market in recent years, but the Party Central Committee and State Council rolled out successive policies to relieve difficulties and benefit enterprises and people; public health awareness grew ever stronger, tea markets everywhere gradually recovered, and sales improved. In 2021, Fuding’s tea industry generated total output value of 13.726 billion yuan, up 14.8% year on year, providing more than 100,000 jobs and effectively raising the incomes of 380,000 people engaged in tea.<\/p>\n

At the opening ceremony, the International Tea Committee conferred on Fuding City, Fujian Province the honorary titles of “Birthplace of World White Tea” and “World White Tea Culture Industry Science and Technology Center.” Qi Xuchun presented the plaques and declared the 2022 International White Tea Forum officially open. Fuding Municipal Party Committee Secretary Lin Qing, Municipal People’s Congress Standing Committee Chairman Cai Meisheng, and Mayor Zhou Chunhai received them.<\/p>\n

Chen Xu, deputy mayor of Fuding, presented the “World White Tea Center project.” He introduced that the center will be sited in Fuding’s central urban area with a planned area of about 40 square kilometers, covering white tea trading, warehousing, R&D, smart manufacturing, finance and cultural display functions, creatively fusing the online tea world and the physical one. Once built, the center will act as the “main engine” driving whole-chain development and become the world white tea landmark by which Fuding goes out to the world and wins global renown.<\/p>\n

That afternoon, the salon was held at the Jinlong Grand Hotel in Fuding. It invited representatives of embassies and tea industry associations from more than 10 countries\u2014Russia, India, the UK, France, Japan, Australia and others\u2014along with elite representatives of Chinese and international tea brands such as Bama, Xiaoguan Tea, Huaxiangyuan, Yifu Tang, Zhuyeqing, and Germany’s Wan Tea, to diagnose and chart the course of the international white tea industry, establish friendly cooperative relations linking international, domestic and Fuding forces, and build a platform for international cooperation with shared resources and mutual benefit, supporting the industry’s high-quality development.<\/p>\n

On the 2nd, the 2022 International White Tea Forum also hosted a premium Fuding white tea exhibition and a tea-country tour.
The blueprint is drawn; the mission urges us on. In both rank and scale, this forum and symposium are a bold stroke in the history of Fuding white tea’s development, and will give major impetus to the industry’s growth.
