On September 16, the 2022 Bama Tea “Double Champion, Double Tea King” launch press conference was held online.
It was announced at the conference that the combined total prize money of the 2022 Wuyi Rock Tea “Double World Heritage” Cup Tea King Competition (hereinafter “2022 Wuyi Rock Tea King Competition”) and the 2022 Anxi Tieguanyin Tea King Competition and the 2nd Strong-Fragrance Anxi Tieguanyin (Raw Material) Selection (hereinafter “2022 Anxi Tieguanyin Tea King Competition”) exceeds RMB 4.8 million. These two competitions are hosted by the competent government departments and authoritative industry institutions of Wuyishan City and Anxi County, and organized by Bama Tea.
A Bama Tea representative explained that the “double champion” in “Double Champion, Double Tea King” signifies that Bama Tea has ranked first in tax payments among tea enterprises in both Wuyi Rock Tea and Anxi Tieguanyin origin regions for two consecutive years, while “double tea king” means that the two tea king competitions for southern and northern oolongs are launched simultaneously this year. “We hope that high-level competitions will guide and encourage tea farmers and tea enterprises to make good tea, while also selecting fine teas for consumers.”
Su Feng, professor-level senior agronomist at the Fujian Provincial Crop Cultivation Technology Extension Station and judge representative of the “Double Champion, Double Tea King” competitions, said that the simultaneous launch of the two southern and northern oolong competitions, featuring high prize money, high authority and high standards, is the biggest highlight of this event.
Upgraded Competitions, Big Money to Incentivize Good Tea
Fujian is a major tea province, leading the country in many indicators such as average yield per unit, whole-industry-chain output value and dry maocha output. Among them, the “southern and northern oolongs” represented by Anxi Tieguanyin and Wuyi Rock Tea are two renowned tea treasures famous nationwide and the “golden signboard” of Fujian’s tea industry, while the tea king competitions are the “weathervane” of the oolong tea market.
It is understood that, according to the schedule, the 2022 Wuyi Rock Tea King Competition will collect tea samples from across Fujian Province from October 8 to October 13. The total prize money exceeds RMB 4 million, divided into three groups \u2014 Da Hong Pao, Lao Cong Shui Xian and Rou Gui \u2014 with one Tea King Award each for Da Hong Pao, Lao Cong Shui Xian and Rou Gui; three Gold Awards each for Da Hong Pao, Lao Cong Shui Xian and Rou Gui; ten Silver Awards each for Da Hong Pao and Lao Cong Shui Xian, and sixteen Silver Awards for Rou Gui.
The 2022 Anxi Tieguanyin Tea King Competition will collect tea samples from within Anxi County from October 28 to 30. The competition is divided into light-fragrance and strong-fragrance groups, each selecting one Tea King Award, three Gold Awards and ten Quality Awards, with total prize money exceeding RMB 700,000.<\/p>\n

This year, the tea king competitions in both places have been upgraded in many respects, and the most eye-catching is the further increase in total prize money. In the 2022 Wuyi Rock Tea King Competition, the Tea King Award for each of the three groups has been raised from RMB 200,000 to RMB 300,000, and the total prize money has once again reached a new high; meanwhile, the Tea King Award and Quality Award prizes of the 2022 Anxi Tieguanyin Tea King Competition have both been raised again, with the total prize money increasing by more than RMB 100,000 over last year.
Industry insiders commented that, facing an uncertain market environment, Bama Tea’s continued increase in investment in the tea king competitions will undoubtedly bring confidence and certainty to the market.
In addition, the organizer will take various measures to strictly control the total tea loss rate during the competitions, taking the lead in responding to the government’s call and complying with regulations, so that participants can gain more with less cost.
The tea king competitions have also been welcomed by tea farmers in both places. First successfully held in 2020, the Wuyi Rock Tea “Double World Heritage” Cup Tea King Competition is now in its third year and is hailed as the “Oscars” of the Wuyi rock tea world; the Anxi Tieguanyin Tea King Competition, which began in 2019, is a classic Bama event that has attracted great attention from the local government, tea farmers and consumers. Tea farmers who have won the “Tea King” crown in past competitions, besides receiving generous prizes, have also become benchmarks of local tea-making craftsmanship, generating a demonstration effect.
