The story of Liming Tea Factory is a microcosm of the transformation of many state-owned tea factories in Yunnan.

From the 1990s to the early 2000s, China’s state-owned enterprises went through a profound reform. Many state-owned tea factories, burdened by rigid systems, low efficiency and heavy debt, had no choice but to restructure. Some were acquired by private enterprises, some underwent shareholding reform, and some closed down entirely. Liming Tea Factory also went through its own transformation amid this wave of reform. The change from state-owned to private was not merely a change in shareholding structure — it was a comprehensive renewal of business philosophy, management model and market strategy.

The early days of the transformation were the hardest. Veteran employees, accustomed to the “iron rice bowl” of the state-owned era, suddenly had to face market competition, and many could not adapt at first. Moreover, the problems accumulated in the state-owned era — aging equipment, slow technological renewal — all required substantial capital to solve. Yet the transformation also brought new vitality. After privatization, the factory could respond to market demand more flexibly; the product line grew richer, and sales channels shifted from the planned-economy era of unified purchase and marketing to independent operation facing national and even overseas markets.

I witnessed this process myself. In the late 1990s, I went to Menghai with several tea friends for an inspection. We saw many state-owned tea factories whose workshops stood idle, equipment covered in rust, workers scattered everywhere — a sight that made one sigh. But at the same time, we saw enterprising entrepreneurs begin to take over these factories, injecting new capital and management philosophy. They retained the original tea-making technical teams while introducing modern production equipment and quality management systems, breathing new life into the old factories. After its transformation, the Ba Jiao Ting brand actually expanded its market share, with products selling all over the country.

From a health and wellness perspective, the transformation of tea factories is actually good news for consumers. Market competition forces factories to pay more attention to product quality, because only good quality can survive fierce competition. After its transformation, Ba Jiao Ting became stricter in raw-material sourcing, production processes and quality testing, so consumers can buy tea products of more stable quality with assured safety. Private tea factories also place greater emphasis on brand building and consumer experience, with marked improvements in packaging and after-sales service.

Tea has grades high and low, but everyone may enjoy it regardless of status. The change from state-owned to private turned Pu-erh tea from a “unified purchase and marketing” commodity of the planned-economy era into a “brand consumption” product of the market-economy era. Behind this change lies the profound transformation of China’s entire economic system. For ordinary consumers like us, the greatest benefit is simply more choice — Pu-erh teas of different brands, vintages and price points dazzle the eye, and there is always one that suits you.

The pain of transformation is temporary, but the progress it brings is lasting. It is like drinking tea: new tea has its fresh briskness, aged tea has its mellow depth, and every stage has its unique value. Liming Tea Factory’s road of transformation was full of challenges, but in the end they came through — and came through more steadily. This story tells us: whatever changes we face, as long as we keep our original aspiration and hold fast to quality, we can stand firm amid the storms. Making friends through tea — please, have a cup.

—

Author: Lam Sam (LamSam), the Old Tea Head
ZENTEA MANOR
Alliance Supply Chain Services Limited
www.zentea-shop.com

Cloud tea is like life; life is learning, wisdom is cultivation.
